The Fantastagirls Final

editing - new shots

The last shot that we put in was for Megan 'Giggle Girl' we found it quite difficult to actually shoot this part because it took quite a while to do so. The scene shows megan on her phone, and her 'mother' coming in and shouting at her, megan then starts 'giggling' which we have in the background noise, and then it shows the power the laugh has to the persons hearing. We were very happy with this shot too as we thought it was very funny and would be entertaining for the audience to watch.

editing - new shots

In this shot we were showing the power for 'Fire Girl' as fire could normally connote to a dangerous way, we decided to keep it simple to show the power of fire. We used candles to do this, and we felt that with the clicking of fingers and the appearing of the flame, it was an interesting way that we conveyed the power of 'fire.' This is another shot that we were very happy with.

editing - new shots

In this shot we show my power 'Air Girl' in which I am attempting to work, and then I use my 'power' to blow the papers off the table. This is another insight into the film as we are showing the powers of the girls. I was really pleased with this shot as I felt that it was really fun and unique. We cut the point where the papers blew off the table, and made it quicker to give if a better power effect.

editing - new shots

In this shot, we see a a shot of a bath with no bubbles in, then we see a shot of Holly blowing bubbles, and bubbles then appear into the bath. From doing this, we give a small look into the powers that each fantastagirl has. We done this because it was felt by others that the powers were not clear to the audience, and we felt that we needed to include their powers in the title sequence in order for it to be more fun.

editing - new shots

This is another new shot that we have put in, as the last one with the titles 'Megan Mead' had Megan in it but she was laughing and it made it seem unprofessional. Because of this, we used a simple but fun way in the entering of the titles, so it was still unique but not too complicated to do so. We are a lot happier with this as we think it looks fun and will be fun for our target audience.

Editing - new shots

This is one of the new shots that we have put into the title sequence, as the one before hand was very dark and there was no way that it could have been lightened without it looking unrealistic. We were a lot happier with this shot as it is a lot brighter, and you can actually see me in the shot this time.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Regarding what I have learnt in reference to our media product, I have learnt that in order for our group to have the best possible product was for us all to communicate well with each other and for all of us to listen to each other’s ideas too. We did have many difficulties when it came to the construction of our media product, for example, our ideas. We all had many ideas that we wished to share with each other, but in some cases it was that we did not all agree with each other, or that it was just not possible for us to complete the specific idea.

During the filming of our title sequence, we decided to change our first idea, this was because when it came to the actual filming of it, and when we were watching over the footage, we were not fully happy with the outcome and we felt that we needed to portray the ideas that we had better. From this, we then changed our story boards.

From the above, I believe that an important part of the completion of the full product was planning. It is definitely essential to plan when it comes to completing the product. This includes: story boards; the dates of when we would film; what we were going to film; the different angles and when we would edit the footage we had shot. I think in regards to what I have learnt, I think that we would have had less problems if we would have planned the filming more as when it actually came to it, we often found ourselves going off on tangents and not being very aware of what we were filming. Having said this, I do believe that in regards to the production and planning, I worked very hard in trying to control the situations, the editing process and essentially getting the best possible shots that we initially wanted. I personally think that during the progression of making the title sequence, my skills regarding final cut pro have improved. This is because I was often doing the editing, and staying after school to complete the editing. As we had a lot of footage in our title sequence, this also helped with my editing skills because we had to be very thorough when we were editing it, in order for the duration of the title sequence to be smooth.

Another essential component that I have improved on is my leader ship skills. This was by assigning certain areas that needed to be completed to other members of the team, and then completing certain areas myself too, I felt that in order for us all to complete the media product we all needed to be doing similar amounts of work. By taking on the role of the leader, I had to make sure that everyone was doing the right things and putting enough work into them. Another point that I have improved on, is working in a team. I often find myself wanting to take control and do a lot of the work, but in this case I realised that it was impossible to everything alone. From this, it has improved my skills in being able to listen to everybody’ s ideas, and also making sure that everybody was heard in the group. I felt that it was essential that we were all working together and that no one was left out and felt comfortable with what they were completing.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

How did you attract/address your audience?

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Entry

I really think that we would benefit if we had some feedback from children who we would initially target the film at. I have created a survey online to get some feedback, and I have also asked some people to watch and write back on what they think. I think we would benefit from this as we have only got criticism from an older audience, if we were to get some comments from our actual targeted audience, and their opinions I think this would really help in trying to get the best possible media product.

This is the link for the survey that I have created:

Editing

After looking at all of these shots, I feel that they should be lighter and also, again, after speaking to our teacher we need to include more shots, to also show the power of the individual character as they are unclear within the sequence. We have decided that after every shot of someone putting on their top, we are going to show shots of each one doing their power. For example, after Bobbie puts on her shot, we will show a shot after this where she is doing something with fire, Holly with bubbles, Megan laughing, and myself with Air. I think that if we do this, it will not only make the title sequence longer, but it will also subtly show to the audience the powers that each girl has, as I have previously stated, this is unclear within it.

Editing

This is another shot that we need to film again, this is because it is not fluent enough and also after speaking to our teacher, it seems that Megan cannot take it seriously, where it was purposely intended for her to be laughing. Because of this reason, we are going to re shoot it, and Megan will just be writing her name, but because of her power of the 'Giggle' we are going to include shots of her laughing later on in the sequence instead of at this point.

Editing

In the title sequence, this shot shows Holly standing at the door for a second or so, this ruins the look as it makes it look unprofessional. We are still keeping this shot as we do not need to change it, having said this, we do need to update with the editing, and cut the ending of this shot, so we do not see Holly standing there for that extra second.

Editing

We are going to have to re shoot this shot because the lighting in the background will ruin the opportunity in changing the brightness. After speaking to our teacher I also agree that this shot is very dark, and it does not link in well with our target audience or the feel of the genre as we want it to be entertaining and fun.

Editing

This is one of the shots within the title sequence that we need to edit as it is too dark, we are firstly going to edit the brightness to see if this will make a difference. If we are unlucky and it doesn't make much of a difference, we are going to re shoot this part.

Diary Entry

We have received feedback from the class and from our teachers regarding the title sequence. At the moment it is on a D grade due to the title sequence not being long enough. After discussing with the group, we feel that we need to include more shots that focus around the fantastagirls powers. Having said this, another aspect that will be required is the lighting of our shots, because in some cases they can be too dark. Taking this on, we are going to analyse the title sequence and edit it more thoroughly, and lighten it up in some places, in order for it to be a lot more diverse and fun feeling. Also, we are going to shoot more and include the shots into the title sequence, in hope that it could be more clear about the power that each fantastagirl obtains.

Evaluation (First)

This is the first draft of my evaluation, I am going to put it into a powerpoint and film myself speaking for the final piece.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
In our media product we have used the conventions of real media products in our title sequence. We have included the main conventions into our title sequence, for instance the title of the film, the introducing of the characters, the titles of the people who have produced the film and we have also included conventions that are associated with the genre of superheroes. We also used conventions of media products regarding to the mise-en-scene, for example, it could be said that with female superheroes, they would typically wear tight fitted clothing for costumes, and when there is more than one superhero, they would have a similar look, and we have acquired this convention in our title media product to create the stereotypical look for superheroes. When we researched into other superhero title sequences they are frequently upbeat and optimistic, which we too have done with the use of the music in the title sequence. From using the cheerful music, we felt that it would be more convenient towards our target audience of children as this would be seen as fun, which is an essential element that needed to be created. Another aspect which adds to the fun atmosphere of our title sequence is through the use of the editing. Instead of using a long narrative, which could be seen as boring, we have used quick cuts which feel quicker and more exciting for the audience. In our media product we also challenge the typical stereotype associated with super heroes. Stereotypically, it could be said that most superheroes are associated with males, where as in our media product we have represented a team of four superheroes as young females. From doing this, we feel that it creates a positive view towards females and we go against the stereotype of female superheroes as being sexually viewed; instead we have portrayed the characters as young and fun, creating a positive and possibly creating an idolising figure for the audience.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?
In our media product, the social groups that have been represented our young females. We wanted to portray an optimistic view towards the females included in our product, as our target audience is of a younger age meaning that we would need to portray model type females, as previously stated, where a younger girl could idolize them. I personally think that in our title sequence, we portray positive and stereotypical elements towards the characters. For example, the audience would see the duration of the characters getting ready in the morning. As a stereotypical girl, this would include showering, doing their hair, eating breakfast, doing their makeup and getting dressed. We have included this in the sequence, setting up a stereotypical example of girls, but it also indicates to the audience that the girls are all ‘normal’ except from the point of being superheroes. We felt that it was very important to portray a positive view to young girls, as often in British society young girls can often be viewed in a negative stereotypical way, we wanted to contrast against this, and therefore the above reasons go against negative representations of young females. By representing a positive view to this social group, it is a lot more suitable for our target audience as most parents would not want their children to be picking up bad habits, as children can often be influenced highly by what they watch in films.

What kind of media institution might distribute you media product and why?
A media institution that would be relevant to distribute our media product would be Walt Disney as it has distributed many films associated with similar genres, such as ‘the avengers’ ‘sky high’ and ‘the incredibles’ all of which are familiar in target audiences and genres. ‘The Avengers’ is similar to our film regarding the coming together of more than one superhero. ‘Sky High’ is also similar when referring to the genre and the type of characters that are shown in the film too. Although ‘The Incredibles’ is a cartoon, which contrasts to our media product, the target audience is similar as it is for children. Concerning all the above points made, it would seem clear that Walt Disney would be an appropriate distributer for our media product as many of the films that have been produced are for a younger audience, and all of which are similar in the upbeat and entertaining aspect that we wanted to grasp for our media product.

Who would be the audience for your media product?
When we firstly discussed our target audience for our media product, we decided on the target audience for the ages of 10-18. However, after presenting to the class and receiving the feedback it was felt by other members that our target audience should have been lower. We realized that the age of 18 was far too high, and that somebody at that age would probably not be interested in watching the film. Taking this into consideration, we lowered the target audience for our product as we felt that the idea of the film would be much more appropriate to a younger audience as the idea of the film was essentially a lot more childish. Saying this, we kept the idea of targeting the media product at females as they would be able to relate to the characters regarding fashion and idolization. We also felt that the secondary audience for our media product would be for families; this is because we intended the film to be entertaining and fun, which would be appropriate for all audiences. Also, if the children seeing the film were young, it would seem appropriate to have the secondary audience for families as their parents may also watch the film with them too.

How did you attract/address your audience?
The main feature in our media product that addressed to our audience was through the characters in the film. The young girls portrayed in the film would appeal to younger girls as they would be attracted in watching an entertaining film that was associated with girls. The overall tone of our title sequence represents an entertaining, diverse and fun feel towards the idea; this is another aspect that is attractive for our audience, whom would want to watch something that is fun and enjoyable. In our group we also discussed, in reference to the idea of the film, merchandise, this is an element that would go beyond the film itself, but the idea arose and the thought of merchandise would be exciting for younger audiences. For example, happy meal toys from McDonalds could also help in the influence of watching the film, which we felt was another way that would address the audience. It would also seem appropriate to mention that the title sequence itself is enjoyable and cheerful from the previously mentioned use of music and mise-en-scene which would initially entertain and possibly influence the audience to watch the film as it would draw them in. I also think that the initial idea of the film would be presentable to our audience, this is because a superhero film featuring four girls is quite unique and new, fun ideas would be an exciting thing for the audience to look forward too, seeing as our audience is of a young age.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
The very main technology that took place in regards to construction of the product was final cut pro. The editing software itself was the most prominent element used in the making of the title sequence. From using the software I have learned a number of features that enabled us to create our product. This includes: adding footage; cutting footage, including sounds; the editing process itself and more, all of which seem small, but were essential in the construction of the product. The editing, at times, was very confusing and also very frustrating in regards to fitting together the bits of footage and making them fluent. Having said this, once you have watched over a section that is continuous and fits well, it is more than satisfying to watch your product slowly come together. When we were including the titles into our sequence we had to keep finding places to put them, and for it to also look professional and presentable, which was another difficult task that we had to learn and grasp in order for our product to look how we wished. Although I did learn a lot from final cut pro, in regards to learning about technologies during the process of the construction, I personally believe that the key component in our media product was due to the filming process itself. We had many filming sessions, which at times were very entertaining, but also very frustrating when it came round to the editing process. Through the process of making the sequence, we have learned that in order to get the best possible footage, it is essential to film as much as possible, from all angles, and to have multiple shots. Doing this allowed us to choose the best possible footage and to then go on and edit it. The above stated are probably the most important parts in reference to what we learned during the construction of our media product.

Filming entry

After getting feedback from the class and from the teachers, we were told that we needed to include more shots of us getting ready and to make it appear as if we were all in different houses. In the beginning we had jump cuts of all of us walking down the stairs, but this was in the same house, this made it unclear as to why we were all in the same house as we were all meant to be separate and then coming together. From this, we have shot more of us in the mornings, this includes all of us waking up in our beds and only one person walking down the stairs. We were happy with the shots we done today, and we feel that it will be clearer when we have included them in the sequence.

Editing process

There was a shot of myself 'air girl' that we were happy with the shot, but it was in reverse to the other girls close up shots. We had to change the way that the shot was played so it would match the other shots. Also, the shot of Holly, 'air girl' where she blows the bubble. We needed to include her name in the sequence, we found the typography and downloaded it on to final cut and then we added her name into it. But we wanted it to appear as if it came out when she was blowing the bubble, and then explode at the same time that the bubble popped. We found this quite difficult because we could not find out how to do so. There was an effect on final cut pro that allowed us to do this, and we were a lot happier with the way her name appeared. We still need to add in the rest of our clips into the sequence too.

I also think that we need to use more editing into the sequence to give the fantastagirls a more 'super hero' theme presented. On the close up shots of all of us, I think we should include an effect that can add to this; it will make us appear as superheroes more clearly to the audience. We are going to apply these changes to the title sequence tomorrow.

Editing process

As we shot many clips yesterday (30/1/13) we had a lot of clips to choose from. Although it was a long process, it enabled us to choose from a larger variety of shots, giving the best available out come.

First edit of The Fantastagirls title sequence

30/1/13

Below are some pictures of the location that we were filming in on the 30th January. During this time, we filmed the rest of our title sequence. We filmed the fantastagirls coming together, individual shots, shots of us walking, and leaving the house. We filmed the fantastagirls outside in a really lovely location which enabled us to come in from four different directions and meet in the middle. We did have some difficulties because it was very windy and at one point the camera fell over. After this happening, we put weights down on the camera so this did not happen again. We also got many shots of us as we wanted to choose from a variety of angles. We were very happy with the shot of all of us walking together. We also got a closer shot of all of us together, where we wished the title 'The Fantastagirls' to appear. The shot was also from a low angle which portrayed us better superheroes because we looked a lot more superior to our other shots. We also got individual shots of us, as in our previous ideas we didn't have any and doing this made it look much better. Over all we were very happy with the whole filming and we were all very pleased with the total out come. We will need to look over our footage and then choose which ones will fit most appropriately in the title sequence.

Editing 29/1/13

We have started the editing of our new clips that we filmed yesterday. After looking over the shots that we filmed yesterday we are already a lot happier with the outcome of the our new ideas. We have edited the new clips and put them in order, also including the 'working title' introduction. We are having a problem with including the 'cross dissolve' as it is not working, but we are going to ask for it to be sorted out. We have all discussed the clips that we felt were better to use in the title sequence and we had our individual input of editing so far. We still need to do more filming, which we will then include into the rest.

Fantastagirls Filming

This is a video made of all the pictures that we took when we were filming on the 28th January.

Pictures of filming

28/1/13 Diary for filming

Today we filmed our new story boards. We filmed us walking down the stairs, and some individual shots. We also completed our fantastagirls outfits. Each fantastagirl has a different colour top, with their name printed on the back of it. We filmed the shots of us all putting on the tops. Within our new title sequence, we are filming the fantastagirls going about their routine in the morning, but only discretely showing parts of their faces. Then we will show them all walking, and we will show a shot of all the fantastagirls together, with four close up shots of all the fantastagirls. We are planning to do more filming tomorrow too. We are pleased with the filming that we done today as we got some successful shots. After previous filming, we made sure that we filmed the shots many times to get the best and most successful shots. We did have a few faults when it came to filming Megan, as we felt that the certain shot wasn't very successful but after filming her many times using different types of make-up, we finally got a shot that we were all pleased with. I think that if we were to do anything better, we would have planned which we were going to film first, as at times, it was quite confusing as to what we were filming.

Thursday 24 January 2013

24/1/13 New Idea's

After looking over our footage and beginning to edit, we feel as a group that we need to re-evaluate our story boards. We think that we need to change our story board to make the title sequence more appropriate and realistic. As we were beginning to edit the title sequence, as a group we felt that we were not happy with the total outcome of it, and we decided to sit down as a group and discuss what we were filming and the viewing of it.

After speaking to Leanne we feel that the title sequence needs to be more associated with the fantastagirls and their coming together. We are going to include different shots of them and create the sense of them coming together as a team. We have decided when to film this and we have included better preparation for the filming too, so we hope that it will be more successful. The whole title sequence needs to be more associated with the fantastagirls so we have decided to create the title sequence around the fantastagirls routine in the morning, but we will be subtly showing this. This will include the fantastagirls walking down the stairs in their pyjamas, only showing their bodies, not their faces. We will then have a member doing something associated with their power. For example, myself (air girl) will be out of the shower, and I will write my name on the mirror, as it would be all steamy, creating the sense of air. For Megan, (giggle girl) we will have her applying makeup which she will then make a mistake which will make her laugh, and she will then write her name on from this. Holly, (bubble girl) will simply be eating her chewing gum, which will pop and we will edit to include her name. Bobbie, (fire girl) will be eating her breakfast, and her name will appear in the food, which we will shot hot, creating the sense of heat. Also in the shot of bobbie we will include a newspaper in the background. This will then lead on to them coming together

We realise that we have filmed a lot to do with the other story boards but we are glad that we have noted now that we are not happy with what we have already, so we can film more before we have to show the first preview of our title sequence. It is unfortunate that we have only realised that it wasn't working but we are going to film the parts that we need to so we can continue with the title sequence. This does cause a problem as it means we have to film a lot in a small space of time, but what we need to film can be filmed in the same place.

Typography

Above our some fonts that I have looked at which would seem appropriate for a superheroes film. Although they do associate with superheroes, I think they look too masculine for a girls film, and we would have preferred to have something more girly.

These are the credits that we will use in our title sequence. We are all happy with the font that we have chosen on as we think that it's girly, but also could be associated with the fantastagirls and superheroes.

Thursday 17 January 2013

Danson park filming

Filming - 6

On Thursday 17th January, we filmed in Danson park. We filmed a lot of shots in this time. We filmed people reading newspapers about the fantastagirls and we also filmed the shot of the fantastagirls together. We were very happy with the outcome of the filming as we got many successful shots and we are very pleased with them. However if we were to do this again we would have filmed more shots, in different angles to give it a better effect. Also, it would have enabled us to have a better variety of the shots that we took. We were very lucky with the weather, as it was very sunny and the reflection of the sun on the lake looked very picturesque and this created a sense of optimism. I think that it would have also been better if we were more prepared for the shooting, as we would have maybe been able to get more done in the time available.

Filming 5

On Tuesday 15th January we filmed the scene of Zoracks father (the superhero) being surrounded by people and being interviewed. Doing so required us to have a lot of people around creating the sense of a buzz from the people. It was very difficult to try and get people to help us, as it was very last minute. It would have been better if we could have asked people in advance. It also didn't help that the weather wasn't very great, and if it was sunny it maybe would have had a better effect on the way that the shot was seen. It was quite difficult to film this scene as there wasn't as many people as we would have liked. However, having said this, the people that we did use in the filming were very helpful and there acting reinforced the sense of buzz and happiness that we intended on applying to the atmosphere of Zorack's father. We were quite pleased with the shots that we got, I do think that we felt that this could have been handled better, but we will need to review and discuss the shots so we can get the best possible outcome.

Thursday 10 January 2013

Props

Above are the props that we have used within our title sequence. We have created them on photoshop, by including individual pictures and then adding aspects of other newspapers to add to the realistic effect of a newspaper. We were pleased with the newspapers as they were essential in the filming. The newspapers add to the title sequence as they are based around the media, and we wanted to imply to the audience that 'the fantastagirls' is all that people are talking about within the lives in our title sequence.

Logos/Typography

These are the logos that we are using for our characters. Each Fantastagirl has their own power and this has been mirrored in the typography used.
The logo for 'The Fantastagirls' as shown above, also mirrors the girls themselves. The stars giving connotations of girls, but also, creating a super hero type feel to it too.

Role in group

In our group I have taken on the role as Leader/Director. This enables me to take control of the group and be assertive in our filming and editing. I believe this role is suitable for me as I have many ideas and I enjoy taking control of the situations. Within discussions we can be indecisive and its essential that we come to an overall conclusion that we all agree on. It is important that every body has a say in our group, and I feel that we have all had equal contributions in working together.

Filming - 4

Thursday 10th January 2013, we filmed an over shoulder shot of a person holding a phone, reading about the fantastagirls. This required us to use a dolly as the person would be walking with the phone. We found this quite difficult as it was essential to keep both the person walking and the person filming to be in sync with each other. As a group we found this very time consuming, and we felt that the shot was not working, as you were not able to visibly view what the person was supposedly reading. Because of this, we decided to change the shot, and have the person sitting down at a desk reading about the Fantastagirls. We only needed to use a tripod, and we were able to see what the person was looking at on the phone. We were a lot happier with the change of scenery as it looked more realistic.

Filming - 3

On Thursday 10th January 2013, we filmed a group of people reading the newspapers that we had created. In our story board the shot was going to be a direct view, looking at the people reading, but we realised that an over shoulder shot would be more realistic, as the audience could see what they were looking at. We asked four people to be in this, and they sat on a bench reading the newspapers. We also used a dolly for this specific shot as we had to move along the people to see what each person was looking at. We feel that we were successful with this filming, and we are happier with the change in camera positioning. Having said this, we did have some difficulties as we did not have much time to record this, and again, the weather was not fantastic which did not help with the total outcome. Using the dolly was quite difficult on the specific flooring, as we felt that it looked quite jumpy; we will need to look over the filming on the macs to see if the shot can be used. If it is not successful then we will need to film it again.

Filming - 2

On Monday 7th January 2013 we done filming outside of school during our lesson time. During this time we filmed a shot where a person walked past a newspaper stand, collected a newspaper (associated with the fantastagirls) and walks off with it. We filmed it near a train station, on a main road, where there was a newspaper stand outside. We achieved as we filmed many times, from different angles and we feel that we have been successful in succeeding in this particular series of shots. The only problem we had, was the sizing of the newspaper we had. Although this was a slight problem, we filmed it so that you couldn't really see that the sizing of the newspaper was different. Apart from this, and as per usual, the weather, we feel that we were quite successful with the shooting as we were all happy with the shots that we got. We also filmed from many angles too which allows us to choose from many different shots, which will be more effective and a lot easier when it comes to the editing process.

Filming - 1

In our title sequence there will be shots of newspapers, that we have created. On the newspapers it explains stories about the fantastagirls, and portrays that they are all that's being spoken about in the 'society.' We filmed the newspapers according to the story board. We also had to use a dolly for one of the shots, as it required a smooth movement to be applied, giving the idea of somebody reading the newspaper. It was quite difficult at first because we were just using a tripod but then we decided to use a dolly to give the impression of somebody's eyes following the newspaper. We had to film this many times as we were not very happy with the total outcome of it, because it was paper, and it was quite difficult to film and make it look like it was an actual newspaper that somebody was reading. We are going to look over the shots too see if we needed to re-shoot the newspapers before we use them in the title sequence.
